Two Of The Same

The Creative Work | Morning Writing Exercise #1

Destroy The Ego

Along the journey of self-discovery, “they” will tell you that you must focus on getting rid of the ego as if the ego is some manifestation of evil within you. You will be instructed to focus on developing the goodness within you (the soul) and destroy the ego. And you try to because you clearly see that the self-centered, emotion-driven part of you must not be beneficial, too, because it is so contradictory to the soul (which you already know is right). So then, why does the ego exist in the first place? Why would we all be given this power if all we were supposed to do with it was get rid of it? The universe isn’t a mistake, and neither is any part of your experiences. Your experiences exist solely to train & test you simultaneously so that you can move forward to repeat the process, slowly getting closer to your true nature. The ego exists to aid you on that journey of spiritual development. And unlike your curious, whimsical soul who seeks to spread light and love, the ego seeks the darkness.

“See, that’s why the ego is bad! It seeks the darkness.”

That is why you need your ego!

Or Learn From The Ego

Your ego places you in the uncomfortable reality of your distinct truth. You are light, but light cannot exist without the darkness. One polarity without the other would destroy the balance of life, like the day without the night. The contrast is necessary to give us perspective, the opportunity to reflect, and ultimately strengthen us to move forward. The ego holds a mirror up and shows you all of the things you miss in your search for light. Your very light creates your shadows! The aspects of yourself you wish to hide from or ignore do not just disappear because you want them to; they hide in the background of your life, doing their work from there. The ego helps remind you they are there so that you can consciously speak to our darker nature and learn from it. See where you still need to grow and remind yourselves that in all your divinity, you are still human. You must develop a balanced relationship with your ego, not giving it the wheel but allowing it to show you where you still lack on your journey and potentially even learn to use it as a tool.

Only One Fire

Like fire, the soul and the ego may be the same thing. The soul is the light, knowledge, warmth, love, and protection that fire can provide. The ego is the manifestation of the uncontrolled fire that will consume anything in its path without care. It is selfish, lustful, and moves through rage. The soul and ego are the same fire, but how you feed it and allow the fire to burn determines its nature in your experiences.
