You Are Who You Choose To Be.

We’re told to go out and find ourselves, discover who we are, and then we’ll be fulfilled. Where exactly are we supposed to find ourselves? Is there a specific location, time of day, or event that we exist in, and until we arrive there, we are empty shells searching for our fulfillment?

Actually, I think people tell you to go find yourself because they know you can never actually find yourself; it’s a trick.

We don’t discover who we are; we create who we are. Going out into the world in search of your soul is just a silly little trick to push you out of your comfort zone to explore what life can offer you. If you were to take this wild goose chase of a journey, you would inevitably gain the skills and experiences that would shape your life, and at some point, you’d give up the search because you ended up building yourself along the way. That’s why people tell you to go find yourself, to make you create yourself. You are more like a lump of clay than an empty shell; you must mold yourself into who you want to be.

Nature v Nurture

of course, you’ve heard the debate of whether or not your environment determines who you will become or if destiny does. Well, both ideas are correct. We come into this world uniquely predisposed to different aspects of life. Some people can have natural personalities that make active lifestyles easier, while others have personalities that make creative lives easier. We have a base level of “what is in our nature, “ which is then enhanced or diminished by our environment and experiences. The base-level version of yourself is as much of “the you” that’s available to discover. Every other part of who you are is destroyed and created throughout every year of your life. The “who” you are is a combination of your experiences, desires, needs, and beliefs. You have been given a blueprint, and you then shape your life to match that blueprint as best you can. You cannot exist until you make the conscious choice to be someone. Unfortunately, as children, we have little control over who we want to be, so our parents and environment attempt to mold us into some other image. Now, your work becomes more complicated because you must simultaneously figure out what you want while determining what parts of your mold to disregard.

The Discovery of who you are is the intentional development of who you wish to be.

You are who you choose to be

If you let it, the world will try to push and pull you in whatever direction it chooses, causing your life to be based on circumstances instead of choices. Everyone has an idea of who you should be and why their way is best for you to be happy. Fortunately, you are the only person driving the vehicle of your life, so you get to determine who you are and who you are not. You choose the person you want to become and can always re-determine as much as you need. Life is not set in stone; you are a dynamic character, and you are not obligated to be someone who doesn’t resonate with you. You are allowed to go against the grain and develop yourself in whichever direction feels right for you. Do not let the outside world tell you who you should be trying to become because they will never know the unique combination of events that have helped shape your strengths. Your energy and choices call out into the universe to bring forth what you are a frequency matched to; so you choose what life you want.
